    Perception of Music in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

    This paper will focus on how deaf and hard of hearing people perceive music. I will be taking a look at the statics in hearing loss in the United States. There are different degrees (thresholds) of hearing impairment ranging from partial to full. Case studies have shown there is not a big difference in how deaf and hard of hearing people and normal hearing people listen to music. Some patients are able to acquire cochlear implants that often help with hearing, and others use vibration to feel the music. These vibrations give the deaf and hard of hearing people the opportunity to feel the tone, pitch, timbre and volume. Deaf concerts are now growing as a way to help the deaf community experience music

    Development of a dual Fries-Claisen rearrangement strategy

    Synthetic approaches towards linear fused carbon rings have been developed over the last decades due to their high interest as compounds with potential antibiotic activity and as organic electronics. The application of a novel iterative route towards linear fused carbon ring systems could provide a versatile new mode of access to complex substituted ring systems. Studies have previously demonstrated the use of an allylation-double Claisen-RCM sequence to build fused carbon rings (C). In this thesis we described our work to expand the use of this methodology by developing milder reaction conditions that could be applied to a wider range of compounds. This novel methodology was applied towards the synthesis of benzodifuran compounds (D). Our work was extended by developing, for the first time, a mixed Fries-Claisen rearrangement strategy which furnishes template (F), a key intermediate in the synthesis of pyranonaphthoquinones (G). Our work culminated in a new approach to the pyranonaphthoquinone natural products eleutherin (H) and isoeleutherin (I). [Figures missing from abstract]

    K2-231 b: A sub-Neptune exoplanet transiting a solar twin in Ruprecht 147

    We identify a sub-Neptune exoplanet (Rp=2.5±0.2R_p = 2.5 \pm 0.2 R_\oplus) transiting a solar twin in the Ruprecht 147 star cluster (3 Gyr, 300 pc, [Fe/H] = +0.1 dex). The ~81 day light curve for EPIC 219800881 (V = 12.71) from K2 Campaign 7 shows six transits with a period of 13.84 days, a depth of ~0.06%, and a duration of ~4 hours. Based on our analysis of high-resolution MIKE spectra, broadband optical and NIR photometry, the cluster parallax and interstellar reddening, and isochrone models from PARSEC, Dartmouth, and MIST, we estimate the following properties for the host star: M=1.01±0.03M_\star = 1.01 \pm 0.03 M_\odot, R=0.95±0.03R_\star= 0.95 \pm 0.03 R_\odot, and Teff=5695±50T_{\rm eff} = 5695 \pm 50 K. This star appears to be single, based on our modeling of the photometry, the low radial velocity variability measured over nearly ten years, and Keck/NIRC2 adaptive optics imaging and aperture-masking interferometry. Applying a probabilistic mass-radius relation, we estimate that the mass of this planet is Mp=7+53M_p = 7 +5 -3 M_\oplus, which would cause a RV semi-amplitude of K=2±1K = 2 \pm 1 m s1^{-1} that may be measurable with existing precise RV facilities. After statistically validating this planet with BLENDER, we now designate it K2-231 b, making it the second sub-stellar object to be discovered in Ruprecht 147 and the first planet; it joins the small but growing ranks of 23 other planets found in open clusters.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, light curve included as separate fil

    Transits and secondary eclipses of HD 189733 with Spitzer

    We present limits on transit timing variations and secondary eclipse depth variations at 8 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC camera. Due to the weak limb darkening in the infrared and uninterrupted observing, Spitzer provides the highest accuracy transit times for this bright system, in principle providing sensitivity to secondary planets of Mars mass in resonant orbits.     Antimicrobial Activity of Bee Venom and Melittin against Borrelia burgdorferi

    Lyme disease is a tick-borne, multi-systemic disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Though antibiotics are used as a primary treatment, relapse often occurs after the discontinuation of antimicrobial agents. The reason for relapse remains unknown, however previous studies suggest the possible presence of antibiotic resistant Borrelia round bodies, persisters and attached biofilm forms. Thus, there is an urgent need to find antimicrobial agents suitable to eliminate all known forms of B. burgdorferi. In this study, natural antimicrobial agents such as Apis mellifera venom and a known component, melittin, were tested using SYBR Green I/PI, direct cell counting, biofilm assays combined with LIVE/DEAD and atomic force microscopy methods. The obtained results were compared to standalone and combinations of antibiotics such as Doxycycline, Cefoperazone, Daptomycin, which were recently found to be effective against Borrelia persisters. Our findings showed that both bee venom and melittin had significant effects on all the tested forms of B. burgdorferi. In contrast, the control antibiotics when used individually or even in combinations had limited effects on the attached biofilm form. These findings strongly suggest that whole bee venom or melittin could be effective antimicrobial agents for B. burgdorferi; however, further research is necessary to evaluate their effectiveness in vivo, as well as their safe and effective delivery method for their therapeutic use

    Disability in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Idiopathic Chronic Fatigue

    The current investigation classified 31 people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and 44 people with idiopathic chronic fatigue (ICF) into mild, moderate, and severe/very severe categories of self reported functional impairment. Differences in sociodemographic characteristics, symptom frequency, symptom severity, and functional impairment were examined between individuals with CFS and ICF, and were examined among the three categories of functional impairment. Results indicated that there were no differences between the CFS and ICF groups in their functional impairment classification. People who were classified into the more disabled categories reported more severe symptoms, and were more likely to have scores indicating higher disability on other measures of functional status. Implications of these findings are discussed

    Influence of Tick and Mammalian Physiological Temperatures on Borrelia Burgdorferi Biofilms

    The spirochaete bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is the aetiologic agent of Lyme disease. Borrelia is transmitted to mammals through tick bite and is adapted to survive at tick and mammalian physiological temperatures. We have previously shown that B. burgdorferi can exist in different morphological forms, including the antibiotic-resistant biofilm form, in vitro and in vivo. B. burgdorferi forms aggregates in ticks as well as in humans, indicating potential of biofilm formation at both 23 and 37 °C. However, the role of various environmental factors that influence Borrelia biofilm formation remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of tick (23 °C), mammalian physiological (37 °C) and standard in vitro culture (33 °C) temperatures with the objective of elucidating the effect of temperature on Borrelia biofilm phenotypes invitro using two B. burgdorferi sensu stricto strains (B31 and 297). Our findings show increased biofilm quantity, biofilm size, exopolysaccharide content and enhanced adherence as well as reduced free spirochaetes at 37 °C for both strains, when compared to growth at 23 and 33 °C. There were no significant variations in the biofilm nano-topography and the type of extracellular polymeric substance in Borrelia biofilms formed at all three temperatures. Significant variations in extracellular DNA content were observed in the biofilms of both strains cultured at the three temperatures. Our results indicate that temperature is an important regulator of Borrelia biofilm development, and that the mammalian physiological temperature favours increased biofilm formation in vitro compared to tick physiological temperature and in vitro culture temperature
